Noble cushions for the country house
Mei Dahoam’s successful concept arose, like many great things, out of necessity. While Isabella Giesswein was furnishing her new house in the Wildschönau, she simply couldn’t find any decorative cushions that would fit into her modern yet rustic country house. For this reason, she started knitting her cushion covers by herself, always making sure that they match her new sofa and the cozy fireplace.
The hand-knitted grey and beige cushions were without doubt an attractive eye-catcher and were often admired by friends and acquaintances. They wanted to know where one could buy such beautiful cushions with special country house motifs. This gave birth to the first Mei Dahoam collection seven years ago.
Hand-knitted decorative and sofa cushions
Isabella Giesswein loves the craft, and this love is at the essence of every new collection. “It is simply inspiring how a sample piece is knitted row by row. And to see how my deer or skier turn from a scribbled knitting pattern into a soft, warm three-dimensional cushion”, says Isabella Giesswein when describing her inspiration for every new decorative cushion in her collection.
An exclusive blend of merino, alpaca and wool
Isabella Giesswein uses a blend of merino and alpaca wool for her cushions. The wool of the merino sheep is responsible for the particularly soft cuddle-factor of the cushion. It doesn’t stain easily, but can be washed at 40 degrees without a problem.
The yarn for the Mei Dahoam collection has been crafted and dyed according to her individual preferences at a spinning mill in Breitenbach for seven years now. She likes to work with natural color shades, which she also uses as a source of inspiration: brown, grey and cream-colored decorative cushions convey warmth and well-being.
Alpaca wool is one of the most valuable materials. The hair of the South American llamas is turned into yarn. It is particularly fine and silky, while the long hairs bestow a rustic touch to our handmade cushion covers.
Old patterns on new cushions
The decorative cushions in Mei Dahoam’s alpine look convince not only by their special mixture of materials, but also by their knitted imagery and the separately knitted motifs, which are sewn by hand. The traditional knitting patterns such as the left/left knitting pattern ensure the soft woolen waves, while different plait knitting styles refer to the rustic nature of the collection. Traditional elements such as deer, edelweiss and skiers are applied manually on the cushions by using traditional embroidery techniques. These run like a red thread through the whole collection.
These motifs are hand-knitted, or tailored and sewn as cotton, fur, walk or leather.
Each cushion is unique
Mei Dahoams’s hand-knitted cushions do not only transform every home into a cozy “Dahoam”, but are also unique due to their handmade nature. Each motif and each cushion is knitted according to the same sample pattern, but because it is crafted by hand, it varies slightly every time. Genuine pearl buttons are also used for every decorative cushion with buttons. The matching buttonholes are knitted by hand, and thus look beautiful and harmonious. This results in a deer head with antlers on a wool cushion.
Milled cushions – old craft interpreted anew
Three years ago, Isabella Giesswein started expanding her range of ornamental cushions by implementing an old artisan craft. She obtained the appropriate material from the spinning mill and the old knowledge from a needlework teacher. She then started designing milled decorative cushions. Walk cushions are made of 100% pure cotton. Starting out with a wad of wool, which has to be treated with pure soap, thus milled, she created her first milled cushion patterns with deer and edelweiss motifs.
When milling, two layers are used: Different motifs are “cut out” and combined again into a new motif on a different color background, usually in the colors beige and brown. The back of the decorative cushion is usually bigger and thus forms a stylish border contrast with the front. Isabella Giesswein’s milled cushions measure 50x50cm. The deliberately created border gives the cushions an additional handmade look and became her personal trademark.
100% nature and craftsmanship – but also easy to care for!
The high-quality knitted cushions consist almost to 100% of natural materials and old craftsmanship. Although each cushion is a work of art for itself, they are very easy to care for. All cushion covers are pre-washed and therefore already fluffy and soft when they reach the customer. The wool doesn’t stain easily, can be washed at 40°C in the washing machine and also dries very fast. It is important to use a wool detergent and a wool program. The decorative cushion will then stay beautiful for a long time and turn every home into a cozy “Dahoam”.
